Umbrella Insurance

You have your home and auto insured. But these days more people are suing and the courts are awarding larger amounts than ever in personal liability cases. If the unexpected should occur and you get sued, everything you own could be fair game. To really feel secure, you may need the extra coverage provided by a personal umbrella policy.

Consider this scenario:
  • Your auto insurance provides $500,000 of liability coverage.
  • A serious car accident occurs and you are found at fault. You’re sued for $1.5 million resulting in a judgment against you.
  • Your insurance would pay up to $500,000 for a covered accident, but you would need to come up with the remaining $1 million.

If you had an umbrella policy with $2 million of liability coverage, you would not need to liquidate your assets to pay the remaining $1 million in this example.

Once the liability limits are exhausted on your home, auto, or other policy, your umbrella policy takes over and provides a second layer of protection of at least $1,000,000. Higher limits are also available. An umbrella insurance policy gives you peace of mind by providing additional layers of liability protection.

You may have to qualify:
  • You must carry specified underlying limits.
  • Other conditions may apply
